PEFC/29-31-130 Postal News—Flats Failing Defl ection (Better known as “The D r In December 2009, the Postmaster General announced that there will not be a postal increase for market-dominant prod- ucts in 2010. What was not clearly stated was that in October 2010 all fl at mail pieces that do not pass the new defl ection test will be penalized. (Flat mail is mail in the shape of a magazine or catalog). Carrier Route fl at mail pieces that do not meet the new standards could have an increase exceeding 50%. This seems extremely high considering the fact that fl at mail is currently not being processed on any machines to automate the carrier walk sequence process. Not until the FSS (Flats Sequencing System) is fully put into effect will these pieces be sorted to a walk sequence order similar to the way that let- ter mail is currently done. Getting back to the “droop test” - publishers will be forced to decide if they want to (a) increase the weight of the stock they are currently using, (b) pay the additional price to have their piece quarter folded, (c) include inserts in their project to stiffen the piece or (d) pay the additional postage. We’ll keep you updated as this situa- tion progresses. Many great color schemes begin with a concept and possibly a sample. That sample can be matched to the COLOR BRIDGE® giving the designer the color val- ues necessary to reproduce it, the publisher a real life sample of what will happen when the printer mixes CMYK to make that color and the printer an industry standard color swatch to match it to on press. The whole thing is packaged in a small fan-out swatch book that is convenient to carry from designer table to press side for press OK’s. A special note to designers: It’s worth updating to the COLOR BRIDGE® if you have an older Pantone® book. The latest edition has updated CMYK screen tint per- centages (the numbers really are different/ better) and added sRGB and HTML values for the solid PMS color. 2010 Holiday Schedule The manufacturing plant will be closed to recognize the following holidays: Monday, May 31st – Memorial Day Monday, July 5th – Independence Day Monday, September 6th – Labor Day Thursday, November 25th – Thanksgiving Day Friday, November 26th – Post Thanksgiving blication of Democrat Printing and Lithographing Company, Inc.
