The inspiration behind a fresh approach may come from something positive, like a glance into the operations of a particu-larly impressive building (such as the new Campbell Soup project featured on page 38). It could also be spurred on by something not so positive, like the series of weather related natural disas-ters that has plagued facilities over the past few months. Whatever the case may be, facility professionals can almost always benefit from working in a way that looks beyond their traditional scope of influence. In the article on page 20 entitled “Enhancing Value,” Michael Coleman shows how a limited perspective can be especially frus-trating. He writes, “Some organizations tend to divide facility information into separate, incompatible systems...[but] arranging information in such a stovepipe design degrades its value....Such action also encourages senior management to ask questions that address only part of any issue.” There are so many resources available to facility managers (fms) that can help them broaden their perspective, but are they willing to change the way they do things? Or are they doomed to perpet-uate the same senior management myths of responsibility silos? The technology is there—Michael Ruiz’s story about BIM O&M portals makes the case for strategies that “enable a holistic approach to capital asset management....By integrating these sepa-rate data sets, the O&M portal allows fms to analyze operational data more easily and accurately.” See page 28 for more on this story, and check out the rest of the issue for more on integration.
